Following the Line, Finding Nature's Geometry: A Conversation with Truman Lowe
Join us for a night of discussion with Truman Lowe and Jo Ortel in celebration of
the opening of the exhibition Limn.
The solo exhibition Limn is an examination of the "natural line" in juxtaposition
with the geometry of the straight line. This exhibition of Truman Lowe’s art features
small-scale two-dimensional work, reliefs and free-standing sculptures, and an installation
piece.
An internationally acclaimed sculptor, Truman Lowe makes abstract works inspired
by his deep connection to the Wisconsin landscape. Lowe is professor of art at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison. From 2000 to 2008, he also served as curator of
contemporary art at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian in
Washington, DC.
Jo Ortel received her B.A. from Smith College, her M.A. from Oberlin, and her Ph.D.
in art history from Stanford University. She is the author of Woodland Reflections:
The Art of Truman Lowe (2004). Her essays on contemporary Native American art have
appeared in numerous books and journals, including American Indian Art Magazine
and Native Peoples.
