Educational Classes 

Here at the Museum of Wisconsin Art, we strive to offer quality art education programs for aspiring artists and art enthusiasts of all ages. Class sizes are small to allow for individualized attention. Some classes may be offered each semester and may be repeated to further develop skills. We do try to include a variety of media and themes, therefore, classes will vary from semester to semester. The instructors are trained, creative educators who enjoy sharing their expertise and nurturing budding artists.

Prospective students are encouraged to sign up early as classes without a minimum of students are cancelled one week prior to the start of the class.

Registration

Payment is due with registration. Registration deadline is one week prior to the first day of class. Tuition will be refunded if the museum finds it necessary to cancel a class/workshop. PLEASE NOTE: There are no refunds after class starts. Class confirmation will be sent along with a supply list and /or emergency cards(s) where applicable. All fees include supplies unless otherwise noted.

Pee Wee Picassos

Ages 2 - 5

Developing motor skills is essential to the development of little hands and minds. Using modeling clay, our youngest artists will create masterpiece sculptures, finished and decorated to be taken home that day. Supplies are included.

Families Doing Art – Together!

These activities are for kids ages 4 and up with a parent or caregiver. Adults without kids are welcome, too. Families Doing Art is a way to introduce yourself, your children, or your parents to the Museum of Wisconsin Art’s fun and exciting programs. Don’t miss a wonderful opportunity and creative way to spend the afternoon together!

Paper Mask Making

Saturday, October 18 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon
(one class / 2 hours)

Start with a flat piece of Bristol board – fold, cut and manipulate it into shape. You can color, pattern and design it, and then decorate with feathers, fake fur, wiggly eyes and other stuff! Fun for the whole family. All supplies are included.

Mosaic Moon

Saturday, October 25

For families with younger children, this mosaic workshop is for you. Create a mosaic moon with a crystal drop hanging from the crescent tip to treasure for years to come. All supplies are included, however, you may bring any personal items you want to include in your mosaic.

With the popularity of our Pee Wee Picasso classes we thought the next age group deserved their own fun art class. Just like the Pee Wees, Growing van Goghs will explore different art mediums and projects in these short one and a half hour classes. Something new will be taught at each class. Each session is one class / 1 ½ hours. Supplies are included.

Feats of Clay

Mondays, October 6 - November 10 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. (six classes / 9 hours) Ages 6 - 13 Starting early from mud pies to sand castles, kids have a connection with clay. We will explore shape, texture and form molded from earth. This course will allow students to develop their connection to clay through exploration of various hand-building techniques. My Very Own Dishes

Ages 6 – 10

Wednesdays, October 22 - November 5
4:00 - 5:30 p.m.
(three classes / 4½ hours)

The thrill of creations lives on every day when kids make their very own "me-sized" dishes. In this class, little hands will build confidence and self-esteem while creating unique, functional dinnerware they can use for every meal. Using hand-building techniques, kids will create and glaze a finished cup, bowl and plate they can take home and USE!

Sketch Club

Ages 10-13

This is a fun drawing class where students explore many different drawing techniques using pencils, markers, charcoal, pastels and more. Each artist will tackle compositional challenges and themes, and will be encouraged to develop their own style. Both new and continuing students are welcome. Supplies are included.

Holiday Clay

Ages 6 - 13

Create holiday gifts and decorations from the heart! From ornaments to candlesticks, learn basic hand-building techniques to create a variety of holiday items and gifts. Construct, finish and glaze these holiday treasures and have them ready in time for the holidays! Students are encouraged to bring a sketchbook to jot down ideas. Supplies are included.

Young Painters’ Workshop

Ages 8 – 13

Young artists wishing to explore painting techniques will have fun with this class. Students will build their painting skills and learn new techniques in realistic and abstract styles. We will be experimenting with different paints and tools while encouraging students to work in their own unique style. All supplies are included.

Homeschool Classes

Is It Really Me? - A 3-D Experience

Ages 5 – 8

Tuesdays, October 7 – November 11
12:30 – 2:00 p.m.

In this fun and creative class for the younger home school students, they will make a Polaroid jumping jack on a stick, a painted, stuffed life-sized self portrait and a “me in a box” – an assemblage of objects in a cigar box: things I like to do! All supplies are included.

Sculpture: 3D

Ages 8 – 14

Tuesdays, October 7 – November 11
2:30 – 4:00 p.m.

Drip, dribble and splash a large (humongous) Jackson Pollock floor canvas exploring color schemes and mood. Use Polaroid and disposable cameras to create photo collages and portraits inspired by David Hockney and Cindy Sherman. Mona Lisa and Picasso’s Weeping Woman will inspire you using mixed media to create expressions. All supplies are included.

Painting & Drawing

Create a party complete with cardboard box guests inspired by the art of Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg and Marisol. Wrap the branches with pariscraft to create an animal (inspired by Christo) to inhabit a jungle (inspired by Henri Rousseau). All supplies are included.

Intermediate Watercolor Painting

This class is designed for students who have had the basic watercolor workshop or some watercolor background who want to gain greater knowledge of the medium and continue to grow as a watercolorist. Students will improve their ability to develop their own style through understanding of color, composition and design. A supply list will be sent with class confirmations.

Beginning Watercolor Painting

Watercolor painting can often seem a little intimidating, but all you really need is guidance and patience. We will focus on helping you get more out of this fascinating and addictive medium. You will learn the basics of good composition through use of elements and principles of art. We will be experimenting with many different techniques for achieving textures through experimentation with new artistic approaches. This class is aimed at beginners, but others who have worked with watercolor are welcome to join. You will gain knowledge and insights on tips and techniques presented and have a new perspective for watercolor painting. A supply list will be sent with your confirmation.

Altered Form

Explore form and design through combining and altering wheel-thrown or hand-built forms. Taking inspiration from the many design styles exhibited in the concurrently running, All Fired Up: Contemporary Wisconsin Ceramics exhibition, students will create and glaze functional pieces designed to fulfill unique purposes or push the envelope of functionality. Open to beginners or experienced students. All supplies are included.

Come Up and See Our Etchings!

Thursdays, October 9 – 30
9:00 – 11:00 a.m.

When you get up to the studio you will learn about one of the most fascinating traditional ways to reproduce a drawing! Rembrandt did it and so can you! We will practice some drawing techniques, then polish up some copper and learn some etching techniques, then explore the medium and then we will produce small editions of prints. All supplies are included.

Mosaic Witch’s Boot

Saturday, October 25
10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon (one class / 2 hours)

Come and create a mosaic witch’s boot with a one-step process. The boot base is 10” x 20” and the boot shape is filled in with black stained glass and another color for negative area with some stars and alpha beads in a witch’s type verse in the background. All supplies are included, however, students may want to bring in their own embellishments to make their boot sparkle with some jewelry or shiny baubles. How fancy will your witch’s boot be?

Wheel Throwing

Lecture

A Sense of Place: The Photographs of A.J. Mueller

Saturday, October 4 2:00 p.m.

On Saturday, October 4th at 2:00 p.m. Mark Mueller will give a lecture and slide presentation on the work of his late father, A.J. Mueller, whose work is featured in the exhibition A Sense of Place: The Photographs of A.J. Mueller. Mueller was a photographer with the Appleton Post-Gazette and over 40 of his images taken in and around the Fox Valley between 1942 and 1966 will be on display. Featuring people, places and events as well as images revealing a deep appreciation for the beauty of this area, the exhibition will offer a long-lost snapshot of rural life in Wisconsin. The exhibition runs from October 1 – January 4, 2009.

Sneak Peek Fridays

Sneak Peek Fridays are held the first Friday of all featured exhibitions. Enjoy fellowship and refreshments while learning about artistic media, styles and content. Reservations are not necessary and members attend free!

All Fired Up: Contemporary Wisconsin Ceramics

Friday, September 12 10:30 a.m.

Established artists and rising stars will be featured in this MWA curated exhibition, which will showcase some of the best contemporary ceramists working in Wisconsin. Expect to see clay being used in the most imaginative ways to convey form, function and personal motivation while simultaneously revealing the t4emendous variety of techniques and ideas behind this ancient medium.

Museum of Wisconsin Art Members Show

A traditional feature on the MWA calendar, this exhibition highlights the artistic talents ofour members who work in a wonderfully diverse range of media and subject matter. Whatever your taste in art, you will find something that suits you!

Instructors

Jeanne Azoff earned her B.S. degree in art education from the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater. She began her art teaching career in upstate New York and is presently teaching at Friess Lake School. Jeanne owns and operates the ArtHouse Studio and Classroom in Saukville as a community art resource.

Steve Gerhartz studied sculpture and painting at Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, CT. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Stobart Outdoor Painting Fellowship. His work has been featured in exhibitions throughout the U.S. Steve conducts workshops throughout the U.S. in painting and sculpture.

Rebecca Grover is a graduate of UW-Milwaukee with B.F.A.’s in both Art Education and Painting and Drawing. Rebecca has several years experience working with both children and adults with special needs.

Earl Kittleson is a retired public school art teacher living in Milwaukee. Earl brings tremendous teaching knowledge from both the school and college level to his students, in addition to his experience as a practicing artist.

Debbie Prahl has degrees from UW-Madison in Art Education, English and History. A native of West Bend, she is interested in all aspects of art. She is currently a teacher with the West Bend School District.

John Pritchard holds degrees in philosophy and rhetoric from the University of Wisconsin and a master’s degree in ceramics from Kansas State University. He also studied clay at Lake Placid (N.Y.) School for Music, Drama and Art. He has received numerous awards in exhibits and festivals throughout the Midwest.

Ron Sachse is a retired art educator who is now busier than ever. Ron has a long history of art education and activity with the Museum of Wisconsin Art.

Andee Warren received her B.A. from the University of Southern Maine. She is the proprietor of Blenderhead Papers in West Bend and Cedarburg Pottery in Cedarburg.

Amy Weh has a B.F.A. degree from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, and is the owner and artistic manager of Weh and Weh, a family-run business specializing in mosaic art pieces.
