Art Classes 

At MWA we strive to offer quality art education programs for aspiring artists and art enthusiasts of all ages. Class sizes are kept small to allow for individualized attention. We include a variety of media and themes, therefore, classes vary from semester to semester. Instructors are trained, creative educators who enjoy sharing their expertise with mentoring budding artists.

PLEASE NOTE:
Prospective students are encouraged to sign up early — as classes without a minimum of students are cancelled one week prior to the start of class.

Cancellations or changes in enrollment must be received at least 1 week prior to the class start date to receive a refund. Class confirmation will be sent out one week prior to the start date. All fees include art supplies, unless otherwise noted.

Families Doing Art

These classes are a wonderful opportunity to create together as a family. Families Doing Art is for children ages 4 and up with a parent or caregiver. Introduce yourself and your family to the Museum of Wisconsin Art's art programs and classes!

Spend some quality time with your toddler and let their creativity loose at the art museum! Your little artist will explore the wonders of shape, line, texture, form and design while developing manual dexterity and project development. Limit of two children per adult. Supplies are included. Feats of Clay: Ceramics for Kids
Ages 6 - 13

Wednesdays, February 24 - March 31
6:00 - 7:30 pm (six sessions / 9 hours)

Starting early from mud pies to sand castles, kids have a connection with clay. We will explore shape, texture and form molded from earth. This course will allow students to develop their connection to clay through exploration of various hand-building techniques. Students will create and glaze finish ceramic work that is functional, sculptural or both. Supplies are included.

Join this fun drawing class where students explore many different drawing techniques using pencils, markers, charcoal, pastels and more. Go Green Printmaking (NEW CLASS)

Explore a more environmentally-friendly printmaking through a variety of methods while creating fun, usable items. Students will learn about how to incorporate 'green' methods into relief printmaking and screen printing. Students will print stationary, t-shirts and reusable totes. Supplies are included.

Drawing From Folk Tales (NEW CLASS)

Remember Paul Bunyan and his blue ox? Just as generations past enjoyed and learned from these tales, so will your children. Artist Eriks Johnson will read from tales from Wisconsin and America's mythic past and lead students on an artistic journey of imagination and discovery. Students will draw pictures from the stories explored, developing imaginations and drawing skills. Supplies are included..

The Drawing Circle

Give your child this unique opportunity to work with professional artist, Eriks Johnson, and learn new techniques for expressing ideas on paper. Students in this class are encouraged to explore the imagination through a variety of drawing media and group projects. Students will learn new techniques and fully investigate their ideas and impulses in drawing, collage, and tempera painting. Supplies are included.

Still Life Painting (NEW CLASS)

6:30 - 8:00 p.m. (six sessions/ 9 hours)

Professional artist Steve Ohlrich leads students in an exploration of the fundamentals of drawing and painting--studying proportions, shapes, values, rendering and a holistic working method. An original still life composition will be completed, from an initial sketch to the finalized painting. Painting objectives are to learn color mixing, paint application and procedure. Selected works of art from galleries will be used for insights into color, technique and visual inspirations.

Spring Break Sculpture

Spend spring break evenings creating stupendous sculptures in clay! Students will design and create their own unique sculptural self-portraits using hollow construction techniques.

Just for Home School Kids: Art Explorations with MWA Art Collections
Ages 5 -10
Tuesdays, March 2 - March 30
10:30 a.m. - 12:00 Noon (five sessions/ 7.5 hours)

Devoted to exploring the museum's current exhibitions as inspiration and visual resources, this class will study form, lines and color while creating works of art inspired by masters. Elements of journaling and writing will be incorporated into the process of art exploration. Students will have fun, while learning the elements of art and tapping into creative expression.

Clay Jewelry Bedazzle
Ages 8 -14
Mondays, April 19 - May 3
6:00 - 7:30 p.m. (three sessions/ 4.5 hours)

Students will create unique, chic jewelry to show off with style! Create and glaze personalized beads and pendants in real, kiln-fired clay. Combine with found objects, wire and store-bought beads into beautiful, one-of-a-kind jewelry to treasure. Supplies are included.

Special Focus Class - For Young Art Enthusiasts with Autism (NEW CLASS)

MWA is pleased to announce this new pilot art class designed specifically for young art enthusiasts dealing with special needs due to autism. Parents are welcome and invited to attend the sessions. Under the trained guidance of Barbara Foster, students will create art projects and feel a sense of creative accomplishment. Students will learn how to break down the art process into steps and learn art techniques.

Drawing Composition (NEW CLASS)

Students will use their imagination to create figurative, portrait, landscape, and/or animal compositions while learning to express their ideas more effectively through the principles of composition.

Felting Workshop with exhibiting artist Mindy Sue Meyers

February 6, 1- 4:00 p.m.

Join Mindy Sue in a felting workshop to learn some of the techniques she uses to make her artwork. Felting is an old tradition of pressing woolen fibers together to make an object or a piece of cloth. In this workshop students will learn what goes into the process of making a piece of felt, how to dye it and make an object to take home! Please bring a towel and be prepared for lots of fun!

Mastering the Human Figure (NEW CLASS)

Wednesdays, April 21 - May 19
3:00 - 6:00 p.m. (six sessions/ 18 hours)

Artist Steve Ohlrich will lead students in the classical method of figure drawing, demonstrating the comparative technique of working from a live model. Students will learn a holistic drawing procedure to create a realistic human figure drawing. Line, values and modeling will be explored as expressive tools and essential tools. Anatomy will be discussed and application of media will be demonstrated for various effects. The class is open to the beginner as well as advanced artist. Relief and Monotype Printmaking (NEW CLASS)

Saturdays, March 6 - April 10
1:00 - 3:00 p.m. (six sessions/12 hours)

Explore water-based relief printmaking with a new twist. Students will learn the basics of printmaking while incorporating the more painterly techniques of the monotype. Students will be working towards creating a small edition of relief prints with a monotype addition. Supplies included.

Into to Oil Painting (NEW CLASS)

Sundays, April 11 - May 16
1:30 - 4:00 (six sessions/ 15 hours)

This class will provide a concise overview of oil painting techniques, using methods known to artists since the Renaissance. Because this is an introductory class no prior knowledge of oil painting is necessary, but an understanding of basic painting techniques is helpful. Students will learn about oil pigments and mediums both classic and new, and discuss the benefits of painting in oils versus other wet media. In addition, the class will practice a variety of techniques in order achieve different visual effects, and compare those results to master works of art.

Spring Plein Air Painting

Enjoy the delights of painting in the outdoors. Locations will be chosen for ease of accessibility and protection on rainy days. The instructor will assist, guide and encourage each student to grow on their own. This class is open to beginner and above levels. Medium of your choice. Watercolor Painting

Watercolor painting can often seem a little intimidating, but all you really need is guidance and patience. We will focus on helping you get more out of this fascinating and addictive medium. You will learn the basics of good composition through use of elements and principles of art. We will be experimenting with many different techniques for achieving textures through experimentation with new artistic approaches. This class is aimed at all skill levels. You will gain knowledge and insights on tips and techniques presented and have a new perspective for watercolor painting. A supply list will be sent with your confirmation.

Wheel Throwing

Learn the basics of making pottery, including clay preparation, centering, throwing and trimming. Learn to form several basic shapes and the fundamentals of creating pottery. Observational Drawing

Fridays, February 26 - April 9
1:00 - 3:00 p.m. (seven sessions/ 14 hours)

Learn about perspective, foreshortening, and the creation of space as well as how to respond to line quality, light and dark, and the structure of subject matter and observed phenomena. Students will become confident using several different types of material for expressive and descriptive drawing purposes. A basic understanding of anatomy for drawing the human form will also be covered. All skill levels welcome. A materials list will be mailed with class confirmation.

Observational Painting with Acrylics

Fridays, February 26 - April 9
3:30 - 5:30 p.m. (seven sessions/ 14 hours)

Take your painting skills to the next level. Students will strengthen their understanding of color mixing and theory while improving their skills in painting the three dimensional world and expanding their ability to manipulate acrylic paint. Classroom discussion will explore the creation of dynamic compositions, painting the human anatomy, the work of significant artists, as well as art theory. All skill levels welcome. Artist's Books (NEW CLASS)

Thursdays, April 15 - May 20
6:00 - 8:30 p.m. (six sessions/ 15 hours)

This course is an introduction to the art of making books. Students will learn the skills needed to create unique hand-bound books and progress to making larger forms. The class will focus on traditional techniques but new forms and format will also be introduced. Bring your ideas for texts and illustrations with you to incorporate into your unique book!

MWA Art Faculty

BARBARA FOSTER graduated with honors from Alverno College, receiving her BA in Art Therapy in 2008. Currently she is the art instructor for Donna Lexa Community Art Center in West Bend, teaching art classes for people with disabilities. She is also employed as a line therapist for children with autism through Integrated Development Services.

SHARON GIESFELDT VAN RUISWY is a fine arts and art history instructor at UW- Parkside. She has a BFA in Fibers and MA in Art/Architectural History both from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. With a background in printmaking and fibers, making books was a natural choice to bring together all interests in black and white images, letterforms, text, content and illustrations.

REBECCA GROVER is a graduate of UW-Milwaukee with B.F.A.'s in both Art Education and Painting and Drawing.

ERIKS JOHNSON received his BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and MFA from University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. He also teaches in various capacities at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Milwaukee Art Museum, Sharon Wilson Arts Center, and Artists Working in Education.

TIFFANY KNOPOW received her BFA in Printmaking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Knopow has an active exhibition record including shows in the United States and South America. She was one of UW-Milwaukee's nominees for the 2007 National Dedalus Foundation Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and received a Layton Fellowship from UW-Milwaukee in 2008.

STEVE OHLRICH is an artist who received training in Classical Realism at The School of Representational Art in Chicago. His work includes realistic figurative works, portraits, still life and creative compositions. He is an instructor at The School of Representational Art, Kewaunee Academy of Fine Arts, and also teaches at public art centers and in the homes of individual art students.

JOHN PRITCHARD holds a MFA in ceramics from Kansas State University. He also studied clay at Lake Placid (N.Y.) School for Music, Drama and Art.

RON SACHSE is a retired art educator and a favorite MWA instructor among students.

ANDEE WARREN received her BA from the University of Southern Maine. She is the proprietor of Cedarburg Pottery.

STACEY WILLIAMS-NG has been actively drawing and painting since her early childhood in Memphis, Tenn. She pursued part of her fine art (BFA) studies in France, at the Université de Haute Bretagne, and taught at the LaSalle College of Art (Singapore). More recently she has guest-lectured at UWM and MIAD. Stacey is currently an artist-in-residence at RedLine Milwaukee, and is working on a series in which reconstructed and layere
