The Third Annual Fiesta Cultural Hispana was held May 30, 2009. Sponsored by the
West Bend Sunrise Rotary and Westbury Bank, this event is a collaboration with Casa
Guadalupe Education Center, the Family Center of Washington County, and the Museum
of Wisconsin Art. This FREE festival celebrated the commonalities of cultures by
combining activities involving families in visual and performing arts, ethic food,
and music.
Artist and children’s book illustrator, Francisco Mora was the 2009 featured artist.
His art work was on exhibit in the Flagellants’ Gallery one week prior and one week
after the event. Mora, a Milwaukee resident, was born in Mexico and is most well
known for his children’s book Listen to the Desert. Families were entertained by
a performance of Valet Folklorico Mexico en la Piel. Young and old had the opportunity
to learn Latin dancing steps taught by Simply Divine Dance Studio. Once again, El
Tapatio de Jalisco donated tacos and other Mexican food for the enjoyment of the
guests. Families joined together to make flags representing their family’s background,
and fun skeletons that they can take home!
This program is part of the Ethnic Cultural Alliance established by MWA to foster
an environment that is welcoming and open to families that have new diverse backgrounds
ethnically, religiously and culturally.
