WEST BEND, Wis. (May 1, 2017) – For the thirteenth consecutive year, the Wisconsin Federation of Museums is sponsoring Wisconsin Museums Week, May 14-20, 2017, in conjunction with International Museums Day on May 18, 2017. This week long celebration focuses on the work and positive community impact that museums play in their communities. To commemorate Wisconsin Museums Week, the Museum of Wisconsin Art will host guided exhibition tours, programs, and a special Express Talk at noon on International Museums Day.

Wisconsin is home to more than 300 recognized museums. These institutions large and small, from art museums to zoos, children’s museums to science centers, local history sites to college museums enhance their communities and boost Wisconsin’s economy. MOWA is the only contemporary art museum that’s mission is to celebrate the value, diversity and uniqueness of the visual arts and artists of Wisconsin by collecting, conserving, documenting, exhibiting, and promoting aesthetic understanding of the visual arts of Wisconsin. As a catalyst for creativity, expression, inspiration and discovery, MOWA is one of the top museums of regional art in the United States, with more than 5,000 works of contemporary and historic art by more than 350 artists. Through rotating exhibitions and educational programs, MOWA provides an innovative forum for the culturally engaged.

International Museum Day

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) created International Museum Day in 1977 to encourage awareness about the role of museums in the development of society. Momentum has been rising unabated ever since. In 2016, International Museum Day featured over 35,000 museums hosting events in more than 145 countries.
