Families Doing Art

Pee Wee Picassos
Ages 3 - 5
(one day class / 45 minutes)

Spend some quality time with your toddler and let their creativity loose at the art museum!  Your little artist will explore the wonders of shape, line, texture, form and design while developing manual dexterity and project development. Limit of two children per adult.  Supplies are included. Additional child is ½ price with a maximum of two children. Sign up for one class, or all—each session is unique!

Drop-In Family Program at MWA: Catch Art in Action
Stories Through Art
Saturday, October 16,

MWA welcomes families of all ages to this new and fun program series. Families are encouraged to drop in for special art making activities, gallery tours, games and special guests. Stay for an hour, or stay for the afternoon! Hands-on art activity is led by Jeanne Azoff. Free with general admission. Children 12 and under are always free! Free for members.

Day of the Dead Cultural Celebration
Saturday, October 30, 1 – 4 pm

Learn and celebrate the Mexican traditions of Dia de los Muertos at the museum. In partnership with the Family Center of Washington County and Casa Guadalupe Education Center, the museum will become a vibrant scene of live music, traditional dance, dedicated altars, and hands-on art making led by Ron Sachse. Meet the Mexican born Wisconsin artist Francisco X. Mora and view his artwork on exhibit in the One From Wisconsin gallery. Traveling throughout his Mexican homeland, Mora collects samples of music, stories, images and drawings, later editing and deconstructing them before reinventing them playfully back to life in his narrative paintings. Admission is free of charge for the program.

With the popularity of our Pee Wee Picasso classes we thought the next age group deserved their own fun art class. Just like the Pee Wees, Growing van Goghs will explore different art mediums and projects in these one and a half hour classes. Something new will be taught at each class. Supplies are included.

Sketch Workshops

Join this fun drawing class where students explore many different drawing techniques using pencils, markers, charcoal, pastels and more. Each student will tackle compositional challenges, themes and be encouraged to develop their own style. Both new and continuing students are welcome. Supplies are included.

Learning to Draw What You See

Give your child this unique opportunity to work with professional artist, Eriks Johnson, and learn new techniques for expressing ideas on paper. Students will work with charcoal and graphite and be introduced to the techniques of perspective, value and line. A range of subjects will be drawn including still life and portraiture. Supplies are included.

The Drawing Circle

Give your child this unique opportunity to work with professional artist, Eriks Johnson, and learn new techniques for expressing ideas on paper. Students in this class are encouraged to explore the imagination through a variety of drawing media and group projects. Students will learn new techniques and fully investigate their ideas and impulses in drawing, collage, and tempera painting. Supplies are included.

Composition Fundamentals
Ages 10 - 13
Wednesdays, October 13 – November 17
4:00 – 6:00 p.m. (six sessions/ 12 hours)

Students will learn the fundamentals of composition working from photo references. Objectives will be to learn basic principles of composition including perspective, devices to create depth, lighting, and creating a center of focus. This is where the students use their imagination to create compositions while learning to express their ideas more effectively through the principles of composition.

Ceramic Mosaics
Ages 6 -10
Mondays, October 4 – October 25
4:30 – 6:00 p.m. (four sessions/ 6 hours)

Mosaic art is a fun way to make a 2-D piece of art with techniques that have been in use for over 4,000 years. Come and introduce yourself to the art of tile mosaics. Students will make up their own designs and create unique tiles using clay. These tiles will be assembled into a mosaic. Students will be encouraged to share the completed mosaics and hang them up at home for all of the family to see.

Stamp, Stencil, Screen
Ages 6 – 10

Learn a variety of basic techniques of relief and screenprinting, two different techniques of transferring ink onto paper. Explore these methods of printmaking and also learn how to bind the original prints into a unique book.

Halloween Mask Making Magic
Ages 8 - 13

What is more transformative than putting on a mask of your own making? Students will build molds out of clay, paper mache and painted decoration. Students will be encouraged to pick a subject for their masks that has special significance to them. This class will help make your Halloween extra special with a fantastic mask to wear. Supplies are included.

Home School Classes

Exploring Art
Ages 5 - 10
Thursdays, September 9, October 7, November 11 and December 9
1:00 – 2:00 p.m. (four sessions/ 4 hours)

Students will use their creativity to explore many different art mediums and techniques. From painting and drawing, to clay, fibers and 3-D sculptures. Students will have fun, while learning the elements of art and tapping into creative expression and problem solving.

Shadow Puppetry Pizzaz
Ages 8  - 13
Tuesdays, November 2 – November 30
1:30 – 3:30 p.m. (five sessions/ 10 hours)

Explore the different styles and histories of puppets from across the world. Using Indonesian and Chinese puppets for inspiration, each student will create several one-of-a-kind shadow puppets. And as a group, the class will create a puppet play and present the performance to family and friends at the museum as a finale to the class on Tuesday, November 30.

Age 14 - Adult

Portrait Painting
Wednesdays, October 13 – November 17
6:30 – 8:30 p.m. (six sessions/ 12 hours)

Students will work from a live clothed portrait model on an extended pose. Learning objectives include employing comparative methods for finding proportions, seeing values, anatomy, and a holistic working method. Students will learn to create a strong likeness of the sitter while exploring color, color temperature, and paint application. The class is open to students working at various levels of ability. A supply list will be sent with class confirmation.

Relief Printmaking
Tuesdays, November 2 – November 30

Learn techniques of one of the oldest methods of reproducing images. Students will learn relief printmaking basics; preparing an image for the plate, carving on a variety of plates, printing and editioning plates. A supply list will be sent with class confirmation.

Observational Painting
Thursdays, October 7 – November 11

Students will strengthen their understanding of color mixing and theory while improving their skills in painting the three dimensional world and expanding their ability to manipulate acrylic paint. Classroom discussion will explore the creation of composition, the work of significant artists, as well as art theory. All skill levels welcome. Observational Drawing

Learn about perspective, foreshortening, and the creation of space as well as how to respond to line quality, light and dark, and the structure of subject matter and observed phenomena. Students will become confident using several different types of material for expressive and descriptive drawing purposes. A basic understanding of anatomy for drawing the human form will also be covered. All skill levels welcome. A materials list will be mailed with class confirmation.

Wheel Throwing

Ancient Pottery Techniques
Tuesdays, November 23 – December 21

Students will explore an ancient technique developed in Korea during the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392). During this time, the ever-popular celadon glaze was developed. Because the glaze looked its best on wares with relief carving, and because relief carving takes such a long time to do, potters developed several shortcuts to making multiple carved pots which students will learn.

Renowned artist Rodger Bechtold will present a three-day, adult workshop dedicated to landscape painting in a new and contemporary context; a fusion of representation and abstraction with invented color to the extreme, both real and artificial. This unique workshop will take place on a private historic farmstead in West Bend, Wisconsin. This is a rare opportunity to share personalized instruction with a nationally-acclaimed landscape artist in the picturesque surroundings of a restored Wisconsin barn and farm acreage. Friday, October 8 will include a lunch at the Museum of Wisconsin Art. Register early. Space is limited! Registration Cancellation Policy for Fall Landscapes on the Farm:
The Museum must be notified by phone, 15 days or more prior to the workshop for a refund of tuition, less a $50 processing fee. If cancellation is made 14 days or less prior to a workshop there will be no refunds or credits.

MWA Art Faculty

JEANNE AZOFF has been an elementary and middle school art teacher for 22 years.  She is currently teaching at Friess Lake School in Hubertus. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater.  Jeanne owns and operates the ArtHouse Studio & Classroom in Saukville, WI. 

RODGER BECHTOLD trained at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1984-1986. In 1993 he studied with painter Wolf Kahn at The Masters Art Program at the Santa Fe Institute of Fine Arts in New Mexico. REBECCA GROVER is a graduate of UW-Milwaukee with B.F.A.’s in both Art Education and Painting and Drawing.

ERIKS JOHNSON received his BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and MFA from University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. He also teaches in various capacities at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Milwaukee Art Museum, Sharon Wilson Arts Center, and Artists Working in Education.

TIFFANY KNOPOW received her BFA in Printmaking from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Knopow has an active exhibition record including shows in the United States and South AmericaShe was one of UW-Milwaukee's nominees for the 2007 National Dedalus Foundation Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and received a Layton Fellowship from UW-Milwaukee in 2008.

ERIN PAASCH recently received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.  She also teaches at the Cedarburg Cultural Center.
 

STEVE OHLRICH is an artist who received training in Classical Realism at The School of Representational Art in Chicago. His work includes realistic figurative works, portraits, still life and creative compositions. He is an instructor at The School of Representational Art, Kewaunee Academy of Fine Arts, and also teaches a

JOHN PRITCHARD holds a MFA in ceramics from Kansas State University. He also studied clay at Lake Placid (N.Y.) School for Music, Drama and Art. 

RON SACHSE is a retired art educator and a favorite MWA instructor among students.
