Photographing strangers can be difficult. The result is often somewhat formal and the unfamiliarity between subject and photographer can be quite evident. Photographing family usually means informality and familiarity are a given, but Tom Bamberger, Lois Bielefeld, Dick Blau, and Kevin Miyazaki tap into something deeper that gives their images a sense of empathy and connection that transcends simply capturing appearance.
