The MOWA Shop, located in the Museum of Wisconsin Art, specializes in high-quality, hand-made Wisconsin art. Reporting to the Director of Member Services, the Shop Buyer is responsible for buying and consigning artwork and related museum product for the MOWA Shop. It is essential that the MOWA Shop carries unique and attractive merchandise consistent with the MOWA brand and that it is presented in a pleasing fashion. The Shop Buyer is responsible for providing excellent customer service, assisting with all special events, and helping to ensure a positive overall visitor experience.
Essential Job Functions:
- Represents the museum with a high level of integrity and professionalism.
- Uses POS to sell merchandise, sell or upgrade memberships, track inventory and other museum-related transactions.
- Handles cash and all other tender types, balances to zero at end of shift, and completes related paperwork accurately.
- Assists with all aspects of product development including idea generation, ordering, and pricing.
- Works with supervisor to find new artists, consign artworks, and create new products.
- Returns unsold consignment pieces to artists in a timely manner.
- Restocks and reorders store product and supplies as needed and within budget.
- Captures and updates tracking data for store sales and attendance and supports marketing initiatives by providing visitor data.
- Provides support for exhibition openings, artist talks or receptions, and special or rental events by assisting with set up/takedown and any additional staffing needs. May be asked to serve as extra staff for large-scale special events.
• Supports the Member Services front desk staff with breaks as needed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned and required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Passion and ability to deliver exceptional, remarkable customer service experiences (greet, listen, answer, engage, excite, empathize, thank).
- Must possess effective and professional oral and written communication skills.
- Strong service driven problem-solving skills with ability to “think on your feet,” respond quickly and with good judgment, mature reasoning and decision-making. Able to diffuse negative situations with positive outcomes.
- Proficient skills using PC based computers and Microsoft Office products, especially Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective organizational skills and the ability to multitask in a team-oriented environment, especially during high-traffic times.
Education and Qualifications
- High School diploma (or GED) required. Associate or college degree preferred.
- Customer service and experience with POS and cash handling required.
- Museum visitor/customer service experience preferred.
- Three years of prior experience in a service/sales position minimum.
- Two years previous buying experience in retail setting.
- An interest in art museums considered a plus.
- Verbally communicate and hear individual’s voices to exchange information clearly and appropriately.
- Maintain a stationary standing or sitting position for extended periods of time.
- Visual ability to recognize visitors and staff, and to read computer monitor or print materials.
- Manual dexterity necessary to use computer keyboard, complete forms, and handle currency.
- Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.
