Biography

Jack Robert Hampel

(John Robert Hampel)

Born 1883 in Wisconsin

Died 1978 in Waukesha, WI.

Born in Wisconsin in 1883, as an artist John Robert Hampel was known as Jack R. Hampel. An engraver by trade, he maintained a studio on Plankinton Avenue. His father, John Hampel, was a set designer for the Milwaukee Public Museum.

Jack R. Hampel completed design work for the Milwaukee Saddle Company, Lady Astor Cosmetics, and Harley-Davidson.  His abilities in various media (watercolor, pastels, oil, engraving, leathercraft, and even humorous poetry) give evidence to his abilities as both an artist and a craftsman.

Hampel was a solitary individual who would spend much of his free time from the 1930s through 1960 travelling the back roads of Wisconsin sketching small town scenes and historic sights.  He was particularly fond of painting old gristmills.  He was still a self-employed artist and designer at the time of his death at the age of ninety-five.
