Michael O. Meilahn
Born 1945 in Ripon, Wisconsin
Resides in Pickett, Wisconsin
Raised on the family farm outside of Pickett, Michael Meilahn became well-acquainted with the agriculture that now serves as inspiration for his hand-blown glass. As a student at Ripon High School, Meilahn enjoyed studying art.  “Art was fun,” he recalls, “You start and you get hooked on it.”

In 1964, he left Pickett to pursue an education at University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where he studied agriculture. Meilahn later switched to art, having become bored with the business aspects of agriculture. It was at River Falls that he took his first course in glass, and in 1966 he started blowing glass himself.  He also studied glass in both Germany and Holland, Upon completing his study abroad, took a brief break from his schooling to travel to Bolivia, South America with the Peace Corps. After earning his B.S. from River Falls in 1971, Meilahn went on to receive his M.S. from Illinois State University in 1974.

Returning to the family farm in Pickett in 1975, Meilahn lived with wife Jane and their two children and alternated between farming and working in his glass studio.  He often used the time spent on his tractor brainstorming aspects of his work, such as form and composition.

Meilahn continues to work in his Pickett studio creating blown glass that is representative of agriculture.  His work has been broadly exhibited throughout Wisconsin and the United States.
