About the Exhibition

August 18–October 7, 2019

MOWA | West Bend

David Harper’s blue-glazed ceramic animal heads are inspired by the cyanometer, an esoteric tool alpinists used to measure distance by the shades of the sky, and a French idiom, “entre le chien et le loup” (between the dog and the wolf), which describes the inability to differentiate between friend or foe at dusk. The installation melds a gradual gradient of blue with a corresponding range of expressions, from smiles to snarls.
