Education Program Volunteers
MOWA offers educational opportunities for all ages, including an active schedule of K–12 school programs.
These unique experiences incorporate inquiry-based tours of the galleries and art-making in the studio. Volunteers work alongside MOWA’s innovative education team and Wisconsin artists.
There are two types of education program volunteers
Studio Volunteers
Studio volunteers support the creative process and share their excitement and tips as youth and adults explore techniques and materials to create works of art.
Docents
Docents are a highly trained and dedicated group of volunteers who help engage, educate, and inspire visitors through tours of the galleries or art-making sessions in the studio.

Special Event Volunteers
A wide variety of MOWA Special Events—member days, exhibition opening parties, seasonal celebrations, and signature annual galas—invite visitors to take part in an enriching museum excursion.
Volunteers are integral to the events: greeting guests, answering questions, helping with general monitoring, and set-up/clean-up.

Museum Ambassadors
MOWA always has something new for visitors to discover—whether it’s their first time at the museum or their first visit of the week.
Volunteers serve as museum ambassadors, greeting and checking-in visitors, answering questions about the museum, and assisting customers in the MOWA Shop.

Become a Docent
Docents bring art to life for museum visitors.
A cornerstone of our education program, MOWA docents provided more than 5,000 students and adults with tours designed to appeal to learners at various levels. This group of dedicated volunteers introduce audiences to MOWA’s collection of Wisconsin art. Docents share a range of interests and experience which helps inspire, educate and engage visitors through a variety of programming.
About
Docent Schedules
We need volunteer docents on an ongoing basis. A docent may start any time during the year, and must be able to commit to a regular schedule for at least one year. Docents volunteer in 1 hour shifts.
Docent Training
Once accepted, docent candidates must successfully complete all required training for their assigned programs. Training will cover all education programs, new exhibitions, and galleries. Sessions will focus on information learning in museums, interpretive techniques, and Wisconsin art. Additional enrichment training is scheduled monthly throughout the year.
