(Milwaukee, WI) Museum of Wisconsin Art proudly presents Resilience, a compelling exhibition by artist Katherine Steichen Rosing. The exhibition opens on December 21 and will be free to view through February 18, 2024, with an opening party on December 21 from 5:00–7:00.
Rosing’s works transcend the canvas, functioning as metaphors for human interaction and environmental interference. Through rhythmic patterns of lines, dots, and space, the history of the forest and the anthropomorphic nature of individual trees are revealed, showcasing the stages of life from slender saplings to massive grandmother trees and fallen trunks that support diverse ecosystems.
“When entering a forest, whether urban or wild, I am keenly aware not only of their beauty but their intricate and vulnerable connection to climate,” says Rosing.
The exhibition also features Rosing’s scroll drawings, which document tree species endangered by invasive insects and climate change. Through intricate graphite rubbings, she immortalizes the uniqueness of individual trees and offers a moving reflection on their impending loss.
Rosing’s career includes exhibitions and collections in prestigious venues across the United States and abroad, including Chicago, New York, Washington, DC, Beijing, and Tokyo. In 2018, she received a MAC Individual Artist Grant, and in 2022, she was honored with the Forward Art Prize. With 25 years of teaching studio art at colleges and universities in Chicago and Madison, Wisconsin, Rosing brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her practice. She holds an MFA from Northern Illinois University and a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
