Artist
Alexander Marquis
Glasgow 1829 — 1884 Denver
Marquis studied painting in Glasgow before coming to Wisconsin around 1850. He established himself in Milwaukee and made a meager living teaching drawing and painting portraits in the manner of his Scottish predecessor Sir Henry Raeburn. Marquis was prolific, painting three hundred likenesses and educating artists emerging in Milwaukee. In 1882, he decided to go West and resettled in Denver, where he died a couple years later.
