Betsy Ritz Friebert

Born in Hibbing, Minnesota, Betsy Ritz graduated from Milwaukee State Teachers College (now the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee) in 1932 in art education. Her pen-and-ink and graphite drawings, linocuts, and etchings demonstrate her masterful, fluid line and sophisticated compositional skills. Throughout the 1930s and into the 1940s, Ritz exhibited and earned prizes in local and state juried shows. She served as secretary of the Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors. Ritz married the artist Joseph Friebert in 1937, creating a formidable artistic duo. Since her death, her artwork has been featured in exhibitions paired with that of Friebert. She is currently represented in eleven museums, largely in Wisconsin.
