Denis Kitchen
Racine 1946
Underground cartoonist, publisher, author, agent, curator, and founder of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Kitchen graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee intending to become an editorial cartoonist. Instead, he published Mom’s Homemade Comics, the first underground comix in Wisconsin (and one of the first anywhere), which led to the underground newspaper he helped found, the Madison-Milwaukee Bugle-American. His Kitchen Sink Press, became the most important alternative publisher Wisconsin has produced. Presently residing in Massachusetts, Kitchen is still active in the field.
