Born in Milwaukee, Judith Friebert, daughter of artists Joseph and Betsy Ritz Friebert, earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in art at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. For many years, she has focused on depicting the essential elements of small family dairy farms: the animals and land that support them. She is challenged by the ever-changing shapes of cows against fields, sky, and buildings. Working on site, she uses vine charcoal to apply line freely and expressively and then pastels to add form and color that reflect her emotional response to the subject. Friebert refines and completes the compositions in her studio.
