Artist
Lois Bielefeld
Milwaukee 1978
Bielefeld earned a BFA in Advertising Photography from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2002, and she divides her practice between a commercial career that includes leading international clients and her personal photographic projects that are based in series that explore aspects of society and specifically domesticity. Her series have been exhibited nationally. By chronicling common habits and customs, she uncovers small, subtle differences that reveal diversities often overlooked. The central element of her work is the portrait—an identity rooted in the settings the individuals have constructed around them as in their person.

In Bielefeld’s case, her training has enabled her to convey a forceful message. She has concentrated on images of American home life, as in her projects Weeknight Dinners (2013–15, 2017), The Bedroom (2008–12), and New Domesticity (2018–to date).
