Ruth Grotenrath

Milwaukee 1912 — 1988 Milwaukee

Grotenrath turned toward art in high school, then received her BA from Milwaukee State Teachers College. She married fellow artist Schomer Lichtner in 1934 and the two went to
work for the WPA; Grotenrath completed three post office murals under their auspices. Her early work is strong and forceful, characterized by a decisive Regionalist style. She taught painting at the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee and design at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. Grotenrath and Schomer shared life and studio space and an interest in Japanese art.
