Artist
Tom Uttech
Merrill 1942
In many ways, Uttech is the poster child for Wisconsin art. In his practice, he taps into and combines elemental qualities of much of the art associated with the state and the region, such as landscape, lore, and visionary fantasies. He spent thirty years—1968 – 98—as an art professor at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. His solo exhibitions are numerous and his work can be found in leading museums such as Crystal Bridges in Arkansas and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. MOWA’s comprehensive holdings also include Uttech’s photography.

Nin Gassinsibingwe
Tom Uttech’s paintings are inspired by his countless pilgrimages deep into the woods of northern Minnesota and the Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. Uttech’s large landscapes present nature at its most magical and have garnered comparisons to indigenous Native American artistic traditions, American Luminism, German and American Romanticism, American Transcendentalism, Surrealism, and Magic Realism.
