Turbulent weather fronts excite Mark Weller. Always looking upward as storms build and clouds roil, he finds that clouds “are never the same, never in reruns. Dramatic or friendly, I consider clouds to be the anchor of the Upper Midwest.” To adequately capture the majesty of the ever-changing sky, his photographs are “timestacked,” a term coined by Weller. Each image is comprised of multiple exposures—sometimes up to 100—captured over several minutes that are then stacked and intermingled into a single composite image. This layering technique allows Weller to better depict movement, transcending the limitations of conventional photography. Capturing nature at its most spectacular, his compositions acquire an almost painterly-like quality that “seek to alter the way one looks and experiences the familiar.”
Born in Wisconsin, Weller holds a BA in Mass Communications from University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.
