Rafael Francisco Salas, the son of a Mexican-American migrant worker and a mother who fled the suburbs for a life of farming, grew up on his family’s Wisconsin farm.

Rafael Francisco Salas, the son of a Mexican-American migrant worker and a mother who fled the suburbs for a life of farming, grew up on his family’s Wisconsin farm. After years in New York, London, and the American Southwest, he returned to Wisconsin ready to reflect on rural life and landscape painting. Within the poetry of the countryside, Salas addresses historical and current external challenges to the land marked by his own feelings. Here, Salas pairs rarely seen works from MOWA’s collection with his own artwork to create a dialogue with Wisconsin artists past and present.
