Tony Macias is a Milwaukee-based multi-media artist with a current focus in electric-kiln low-fired and American raku ceramics. Influenced by the energy of the Abstract Expressionist Ceramic movement, his work draws from Mexican and Native American art traditions as well as Korean and Japanese vessel forms. In Terra Firma, much of Macias’s work speaks of the natural world and the common origin story that unites us all. Working with primal materials—clay and heat—he fashions large, circular wall pieces with irregular edges in warm natural colors, often resembling geological strata or the remains of unearthed fossils. Vessels with unusual glaze finishes and textures are reminiscent of archaeological discoveries from another time and place. For Macias, the process of creating ceramic works—rolling, paddling, and lifting from fire—is part of “an ongoing dialogue between earth, fire, air, and sky.”
This exhibition is open to the public at MOWA | DTN, the museum’s satellite location inside Saint Kate—The Arts Hotel in downtown Milwaukee.
