About the Exhibition
“Triangulador means ‘maker of triangles.’ I don’t think it’s an actual word. It’s just ‘something that triangulates…’ The first thing that I drew was a triangle and then I just rolled with that.”
-Liubóv Szwako on the origin of his street art pseudonym
OPENING PARTY August 30 | 5:00–7:00
Experimentation and spontaneity reign supreme in Triangulador: The Art of Liubóv Szwako. Named for his street art pseudonym, this kaleidoscopic survey of the artist’s self-taught hardedge and richly textured compositions, including a site-specific mural installation, presents the mature realization of Szwako’s childhood engagement with graffiti lettering and graphic design. On deeply layered canvases, energetic looping lines and brightly colored triangles peek out from beneath thickly outlined amorphous splashes. The unexpected visual balance celebrates self-expression and the beauty of abstraction. Szwako hopes his art will inspire others to try something experimental and new in their own lives.
Liubóv Szwako moved to the United States from Mexico City when he was twenty years old. Eschewing formal art education, he cultivated his aesthetic by creating more than two hundred temporary public artworks—spray-painting discarded curbside mattresses and furniture in Madison, his home for the past decade. In addition to numerous private collections, his art has been commissioned by hotels, hospitals, and retailers. This is Szwako’s first solo museum exhibition.
