People of the Big Voice: Photographs of Ho-Chunk Families

$29.95

People of the Big Voice tells a photographic history of Ho-Chunk families including more than 300 images by Charles Van Schaick from 1879 to 1942. Van Schaick of Black River Falls, Wisconsin captures native Ho-Chunk families depicting challenges and hardships as portraits, family dwellings and at powwows.

The book includes a biographical essay by Matthew Daniel Mason, a critical essay by Amy Lonetree, a reflection by Tom Jones and a forward by Truman Lowe. Unique to the project are the identifications in the captions, which were researched over many years with the help of tribal members and genealogists, and include both English and Ho-Chunk names.
