Triangulador: The Art of Liubóv Szwako embraces the abstract and innovative

Exhibition August 21, 2024

(MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN) – The Museum of Wisconsin Art is thrilled to announce Triangulador: The Art of Liubóv Szwako, a captivating exhibition showcasing the vibrant and dynamic works of Liubóv Szwako. This kaleidoscopic survey explores the artist’s self-taught mastery of hard-edge and richly textured compositions, including a site-specific mural installation. This is Szwako’s first solo museum exhibition. Triangulador: The Art of Liubóv Szwako is on view at MOWA | DTN August 30–December 2.

Experimentation and spontaneity reign supreme in Triangulador, where Szwako’s deeply layered canvases, characterized by energetic looping lines and brightly colored triangles, peek out from beneath thickly outlined amorphous splashes, creating an unexpected visual balance that celebrates self-expression and the beauty of abstraction.

“I’ve been a fan of Liubov’s art for years, and I was thrilled when he agreed to the show at MOWA | DTN,” said MOWA’s Curator of Contemporary Art, Anwar Floyd-Pruitt. “From his spontaneous spray-painted street art in Madison to the brand-new abstract collages for this show, Liu’s bold exploration of mediums, styles, and techniques continue to develop into beautiful and dynamic bodies of work.”

Inspired by his childhood engagement with graffiti lettering and graphic design—eschewing a formal art education—Szwako developed his aesthetic by creating more than two hundred temporary public artworks, often spray-painting discarded curbside mattresses and furniture.

“At MOWA, we consider it part of our mission to create opportunities for emerging artists,” said Laurie Winters, James and Karen Hyde Executive Director. “In the short time we’ve followed his work, we’ve been amazed by the growing aesthetic sensitivity of his craft. He is definitely one to watch.”

Liubóv Szwako moved to the United States from Mexico City at the age of twenty and resides in Madison, Wisconsin. In addition to numerous private collections, his art has been commissioned by hotels, hospitals, and retailers. Szwako hopes his art will inspire others to try something experimental and new in their own lives.

In addition to the exhibition, MOWA will host an Opening Party on August 30 from 5:00–7:00 at MOWA | DTN.
